Bringing Back the Affordable Ford: A Compact Hybrid Hatchback
Why Ford?
I chose Ford Motor Company because it pairs a strong brand with a visible gap in the market. Ford is best known for trucks: its 2025 truck and van sales reached roughly 1.27 million vehicles, and it also sold a record number of hybrids (Barchart, 2026). Its reputation is mixed, though. Ford logged 152 recalls in 2025, far more than any other automaker (Fox Business, n.d.). Ford says it is improving, and cites top J.D. Power initial-quality placements and $500 million lower warranty costs (News Tribune, 2026). The public expects Ford to deliver tough, practical, good-value vehicles. Buyers would accept something simple and affordable, but another round of quality problems would not be forgiven. ford sales rose 6 in 2025 on torrid truck hybrid demand gains share highest sales year this decade +3
The Unmet Need
New-vehicle prices now sit near $50,000. The average buyer paid $49,758 in June 2026 (Money Talks News, n.d.). Cox Automotive expects 2026 sales to fall about 2.4%, mainly because of affordability (Wards Auto, n.d.). First-time buyers, young adults, and small households are the ones squeezed out. Ford’s own results show the demand: Maverick sales rose about 18% to 155,051 in 2025 (Tradingpedia, 2026), and about 60% of Maverick buyers in the third quarter were new to Ford (Ford Authority, 2025). $50,000 average new car prices are here to stay +4
The Product Concept: A Compact Hybrid Hatchback
My concept is a single vehicle, a five-door compact hybrid hatchback (working name only). Key features:
- A fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain.
- A target price under $25,000.
- Standard driver-assist safety features.
- A fold-flat cargo area.
- Physical controls for climate and volume next to a modest touchscreen.
The benefit is a new, reliable, low-running-cost vehicle that a budget-limited household can actually afford. I chose it for three reasons. Hybrids are Ford’s strongest recent growth area. Ford is already working on an affordable electric pickup, expected in 2027 on its new Universal EV Platform (Engadget, 2025), but that does not serve buyers who want a lower-cost, non-electric entry point. And the Maverick suggests a new entry-level Ford can bring in new customers. Engadget
Research Design and Objectives
The goal is to decide whether this vehicle should launch in the United States.
Target audience. I want to know who the buyers are, how many there are, whether the segment is growing, and its projected growth rate. I also want to learn what they drive now, how they shop and what criteria they use, what they like and dislike about current options, what they would add, and whom they see as Ford’s competitors. A central question is how much they would pay for a hybrid hatchback and which features they would trade off to hit a price.
Competition. I want to examine rival compact and subcompact vehicles: their features, target buyers, positioning, pricing, distribution, and promotion. I also want their sales, market share, awards, lawsuits, and patents. Their strengths and weaknesses should show where Ford could stand out.
